Why do you think Private Gomer Pyle went cuckoo in FULL METAL JACKET?

That scene where Gunny said to Pyle, "Did your Mother have any children that lived?!" has got to be the funniest I ever seen!
Anybody know whether boot camp is really like that? They must have gotten all PCed-up by now, or what?
