Why does Hollywood hate the suburbs?

examples:
Ordinary People
Revolutionary Road
American Beauty
Suburbia
The Ice Storm

Most suburbanites lead happy healthy lives and raise well adjusted successful children, so why does Hollywood think everyone in the 'burbs leads a hollow empty existence behind a fascade of happiness?

I know right, i was just thinking about how many ANTI-Suburb movies their are.

Sam Mendes has made TWO movies about the suburbs in a bad way (he directed American Beauty and Revolutionary Road)

The reason is because suburbia has many secrets. The facade is based on the fact that everyone is happy, as long as no one sees what goes on behind closed doors. Big cities get a rap for being congested, crime infested, dark places. And more often than not, big cities have a lot more to offer and people are portrayed as being more up front with others. Suburbanites always get the nice house, good job, 2-3 kids with a dog. But that kind of life is also portrayed as boring. Many people in the suburbs DO put up a front because they don't want to be seen as a bad or eclectic person. They want to fit in with their surroundings much more than city people, so they tend to hide their secrets. That's why their facade is seen as empty, because people just can't be themselves.
