Why does the quantity of inputs & outputs matter when buying a home theater system?

I'm trying to buy some good quality speakers. But want to know what exactly the number of inputs mean? Is this just the number of things you can plug into it? Also, what is the output?
 
Yes, you want to connect enough components - a TV, Blu-ray, gaming machine, etc.
Output can be HDMI or component for video
