Why doesn't the GPS on the sony-ericsson ELM work?

After 1 minute of searching for the satellite it says that "data connection was lost. searching...". But it never connects to any satellite. Tried it many times in open spaces, took it for a walk :), because some said if you walk you got a better chance to connect.
Any idea what's wrong?
 
If you're 100% sure that you have a data plan which is required to use GPS, then it's a faulty phone and you should get it replaced. But if you don't have a data plan then you can't use GPS.
