Why doesnt Xenosaga Episode 1 work on my PS2 Slim?

I purchased all three games recently from Gamestop, all used of course. For some reason, my PS2 cannot read Ep 1 but can read the second game just fine. This is the second time i've purchased this game, and the second time i've had this error. I dont know if its the same copy, but i bought it the second time from a different store that just recently opened, so i thought that would be unlikely unless the one store shipped the game to the other to help stock their shelves. The only other thing i can think to explain this is that because its a SLIM model of PS2, older games may not be readable. I've been searching online but have yet to find an answer. Do you know why the game doesnt work?
