Why don't my DVD work that I got for Christmas?

There are two DVDs that don't work for me they are Ghost Adventures and Paronormal State. We got them of amazon but they don't seem to work they say check region code whatever that is. That got shipped in from America and I live in the UK if that means anything. Anyone had this done to them before and any ideas on what I should do?
