Many people really need some "greater purpose" and/or "higher power" to believe in.
As for the world being a lot better, well, I like to think so, but I'm not sure. The main problem is that there are a good many people who would intentionally do horrible and unspeakable things if they didn't have some invisible sky fairy to be afraid of.
