why is cigarette smoke lethal to plants?

so i hear i should never smoke while near plants because nicotine kills them but why tobacco is a plant i cant understand it myself

i dont think smoking around a plant would do enough damage to mill it. maybe an indoor plant with an indoor smoker.
but 'ashing' or leaving youre cigarette butts around plants can be poisonus when the plants are watered. then the roots where most the action happens absorbs the chemicals.
