Why is DirecTV's HD picture quality not as good as cable?

I've had Comcast HD for over 5 years and it looked awesome, I just recently switched to DirecTV HD and it lacks big time especially in dark background or scenes with heavy action, is this normal? Same 1080p tv used with both services, and yes I have the receiver set on 1080

Because it is satellite indirectly is why. Satellite used to be better than cable.

The why is that satellite has a fixed bandwidth available to a given area (or nationally fo rnational channels), so they reduce the resolution of HD channels to fit more of them in. Cable has a bit more effective bandwidth, and can used switched video to make more channels available to customers, because customers can be granualted to sub systems of several hundred customers.
