America is blessed with an open capitalist economic system. Anybody in America can/may become wealthy. There are no rules saying that you are prohibited from getting rich. If you apply yourself, you will progress; if you make bad decisions and procrastinate, you will not. The role of the government is to provide you with opportunities to better yourself. It is not the government's role to give you capital. When you are given capital, you lose the desire to work for it. I don't want money from the federal government, I don't want tax cuts, I want them to take that money and create opportunities for me to progress.
"Socialism is great until you run out of rich people to take money from". Ask a Cuban. By the way, my income is less than $50,000 a yea, but I'm working on increasing that number. key word "working".

one major reason that wealth has been moving upwards is that many poor poeple are spending money on things that they don't need.

I want to scream every time that a student asks me for lunch money when he or she is wearing shoes that cost more than everything that I have on at the time

How exactly do you figure you've been "sharing the wealth upwards"? I've been paying taxes to support social programs that share the wealth downwards. I thank goodness my employers have shared the wealth downwards too. Tax breaks for business helps to push wealth downwards.

However, taking tax money from the middle classes to benefit pet projects of wealthy politicians, is definitely driving wealth upwards, isn't it?

Take all the wealth in the country. Apportion it perfectly evenly. Within 5 years 90% of the people that are wealthy now would be wealthy again. Wealth is dynamic. The poor can become rich, and the rich poor. But it's rarely an accident.

There is no inherent virtue in poverty or lack of ability. Life is hard. It's even harder when you're stupid.

Socialism has nothing to do with up or down. For the most part, it is a word that is being used with very little understanding of its meaning because it may people have the appearance of being informed while exhibiting the lack thereof.

Because they liked it when we rewarded the rich and corporations with special tax cuts. Apparently, they also liked it when Bush spent OUR tax dollars to provide free, universal health care to EVERY SINGLE Iraqi and Afghan citizen. Suddenly, it's 'socialism' because Obama wants to return to the same tax rates as Clinton and wants to provide competition for more affordable health care.

We've tried trickle down economics, now it appears we are trying trickle up poverty.

I doubt either one will work very well!
