Why is it that when I use a handheld food mixer...?

to mix something that I'm baking, all the stuff inside the bowl goes all over the place, but when people on like Food Network use it, it stays in the actual bowl without making a mess?
Am I just doing it wrong or do I have a crappy handheld food mixer?
