Why is Mr. Obama comparing 1908 Model T mileage to modern SUV? Are they in his

eyes EXACTLY the same? I heard his speech on the radio today, speaking in California, and he compared 1908 Model T mileage to 2008 SUV mileage, stating that Model T was better. I think this is as accurate as comparing apples to oranges since current SUV has much more power, more speed, air conditioner, is likely heavier, and has other features - like safety of the occupants in mind - that unfortunately use more gas. I just wonder if he wants all of us to get back to simpler Model T or maybe just a horse and carriage (free fertilizer and cheaper fuel), or maybe we are supposed to just walk....

The comparison between the 2 vehicles actually makes quite a lot of sense if you knew what you were talking about. The effects the air conditioner has on gas mileage has no bearing on a car's estimated MPG. The SUV's frame is made of more durable and far lighter materials than the Model T. The interior components are smaller, lighter, and more compact than the Model T. It's ridiculous to think that in the 100 years between the Model T and the modern SUV that they haven't lowered the Gas mileage significantly.

We have fully electric cars, hydrogen powered cars. and hybrid vehicles. We're on the verge of having flying cars. So why are we still producing cars that get 20 miles to the gallon? The car companies didn't improve their cars because there wasn't much of a need to. It's cheaper and easier to add new gadgets instead of improving the engine weight, the aerodynamics, or fuel source of their cars. We've ended up with the most profitable vehicle, not the finest engineered.

Not at all. However, you might think that as all those changes to the automobile took place, they would also increase the mileage. In fact, that is what the Japanese automakers have done, and thus made Detroit a laughing stock.

Seriously, he is constantly making speeches and they have little to now value and don't solve anything. I work with several people who voted for this man and they are disgusted with him as well.
