My 87 jeep comanche straight six engine makes a tapping / clicking noise when you accelerate. At idle it sounds fine. Any idea what that noise is? and could the home mechanic fix it? -thanks

could be a lifter. put some power steering fluid into the crankcase(the same place you put your motor oil)

To many things that it could be, take it to the mechanic. Just tell him to give you an estimate on what he thinks it its.

It's probably your timing is off just a little. Or cheap gas. First question is when was the last time this vehicle had a tune up. I'm talking cap, wires, spark plugs, oil and filter change, gas filter, air filter change. All of that can also make your engine ping. If it's been a while, do it. Also how many miles on the motor? wear and tear can make lifters do weird things. Low oil pressure can make it click too. These are harder for a do it yourselfer to do. That should get you started. Good luck.

chances are your lifters are out of range and need to be adjusted....but as for putting power steering fluid in if thats a no no unless yuou wanna put gaskets and seals in the motor or blow it up put half a quart of regular ATF in it that will make the ticking go down cause it seems to stick to metal parts better
