Why isnt my iphone letting me use custom ringtones?

I just got the Iphone 3g from my uncle but I cant seem to use my ringtone as my actual ringtone! I have a 30 second song in my music folder that i want use but in settings - sounds - ringtone, there is only the standard ringtones. I have no other choices such as Custom. I have no folders that say ringtone in itunes so maybe thats my problem. Help PLEASE!!
I don't want the free sites. I have my own way of doing it, thank you.
