Why must you turn off the car when you're pumping gas?

I see the sign all the time when I go and fill up my tank... not that its all that important; I'm just curious- why?
Thank you!

if you re-fuel a late model car with the engine running you risk air intake and it will cause your engine light too come on.

Because most cars have an internal fuel pump. The fuel pumps are electrical these days, and all it takes is a spark from a 'live' fuel pump to ignite the vapors in your fuel tank.. causing an explosion.

When you drive and the fuel cap is on, the system is pressurized and the gasses are evacuated and filtered so there is no chance of that happening.
