Why won't my computer recognize that there's a DVD in its drive?

I have an hp, and whenever I put a DVD into the drive to watch it on Windows Media Player, or whatever, my computer acts like there isn't anything in it at all. However, it recognizes CDs, my iPod, and all of that great stuff. I'm confused? What's wrong with my computer, how can I fix it, and how much will it cost? Please and thank you.

does your computer have a dvdrom drive or a dvdrw if now its not capable of playing a dvd

likely one of the following:

not a dvd drive.

bad dvds, try a different type, or play it in another system to make sure it works.

make sure there is no background software running that would stop you from playing dvds. sometimes small things like burning software can cause reading problems.

try running a firmware upgrade for your dvd drive. hp's website should have them on their website's download area.

dvd laser is dead on the drive and you will have to get a new one. they are about $30 oem, $50 retail.
