Why won't my mp3 player work in my car stereo usb outlet?

Insignia Cd player. Has USB connection on front. When I connect plug in the mp3 player, it doesn't do anything. I know the cd player usb supports at least this

How do I tell what my mp3 player has? (I do have the manual also)
PLEASE HELP!!!
