Why would a 1997 dodge intrepid (3.5 L) blow black smoke out the air intake?

There also seems to be oil in/around the air intake hose when I disconnect it from the air-filter box. The car will not start, it just cranks without ever attempting to turn over at all. Brand new battery, I believe the starter is still good. There is no "clicking" noise while cranking. This car has about 200,000 miles with no previous engine problems.

You've probably blown a head. Take the car to a mechanic, and get it checked out.

your rings are shot. A compression test will affirm this....good luck
