Will an external DVD drive work with a netbook (Just for watching DVD movies)?

yup any external usb drive works exactly the same that is assembled in any desktop or laptop

you will need a dvd playback software

Yes it should work. External DVD drives usually come with DVD playback software. And you can always download VLC media player, already suggested by Techno.

However, the graphics adapters on netbooks are often very low-end models. It's possible that yours might not be able to handle DVD playback smoothly- you may see some stuttering and choppiness.
