Will the iphone/ipod 4.2 update make my 3rd Gen ipod slow?

I know a few people who have 3rd Gen iphones and when they updated to 4.0 their phone got really slow. But i also know someone else who's fone is just fine after he did the update. So i'm wondering if it's just the 4.0 update that is slow and the 4.2 isn't or if it's all slow and my friend's iphone is just lucky that it's not slow. Also is it completely different with iphones and ipods as far as updating goes? I really want to update to 4.2 but don't want to ruin my 3rd Gen ipod touch.
Plus what is jailbreak? i keep seeing that a lot.
