Windows Vista CD/DVD Drive not working?

I have a Windows Home Vista HP laptop and recently my computer dosnt recognize my CD/DVD burner. Sometimes it will, but most of the time it dosnt register. Why is this? Is it a virus? Did I accidentally uninstall a program?
