Wiring speakers in a home theater installation?

I own the Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSI 7.1 AV receiver and wanted to know if I could wire 2 speakers together on one channel(such as surround or surround back) in ether series or parallel without damaging the audio components?
This receiver outputs 140W X7 @ 8 Ohms.
My speakers handle 140 W @8 Oms.
