Tim Richmond died from pneumonia like 99% of those infected with HIV in the 80s. HIV/AIDS destroys the immune system and the victims eventually die from pneumonia.

No one should draw any conclusions regarding his lifestyle since infection with HIV can come from both heterosexual and homosexual contact.
 
He died of AIDS. It's an ugly disease to die from. You'd be shocked..
It took the life of my father as well.
 
Tim Richmond unfortunately died from complications caused by the AIDS virus on August 18th 1989. He sat out most of the 87 season being replaced by Benny Parsons in the #25 Folgers Chevrolet. Hendrick renumbered the car to #35 out of respect for Tim. Originally Hendrick Motorsports reported that Tim was suffering from flu like symptoms that turned into double pneumonia....it was only after he died that it was brought to the public's attn that he died of the aids virus.
