With the iOS 5 update, should I still be charged for texting?

I just received my ATT bill for this month, and both my wife and I were charged for texting (we don't have texting plans). The only text messages we sent/received this month were between each other after we updated our iPhones to ios5. So should ATT still be charging us for texting or is Messaging not exactly free to send to other ios5 users?
