Working as a fitness instructor?

Just wondering if anyone could tell me what its like to work as a fitness instructor? I have a BSc and a MSc in Applied Psychology, and I am an avid Martial artist who is looking to instruct one day. I was considering the idea of doing the required qualifications to become a fitness instructor (as well as boxercise, yoga, pilates etc).

Does anyone know what the job prospects are like? Is it damn competitive? What do most of your duties include? Do you find there is little room for movement or promotion or is it great in this area? Are you satisfied with you career?

Also, I have never seen a fitness instructor in any of the gyms I have signed onto over the ago of 35. Is this typical? Are they in management positions?

Thanks in advance for the help.
