Would riding on an exercise bike do the same good as running?

I'm supposed to be on the track team when I start school in a week, I was supposed to train over the summer but I only went to the track to run a couple times. It just never worked out, I would get up and it would be raining or I'd walk there in the evening and there would be a soccer practice. Also, I don't like the idea of going there alone since I'm not some big buff person, I'm a 15 year old girl. Also, it's usually really smoggy by the evenings which makes it difficult to breathe.

Anyways, I ride the exercise bike we have occasionally and do 8 miles. If I did this daily (or maybe every other day) would that be the equivalent of running? Like would I still build up my endurance and get a good cardio workout and all that?

Machines help some but it won't simulate running and the benefits of it. It's like using the weight machines at the gym they help you and can get you into shape but using free weights is better for you since your using more muscles and builds more strength. If you can look to use an indoor track at your local gym or maybe ymca that would be a safe environment.
