would this bike pump work on a basketball if i attached a needle?

http://www.athleticmindedtraveler.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/specialized-bike-pump.jpg i have one like this, but when i tried it, it never inflated it. how are you suppose to put the needle on and secure it around the thing so no air gets out of the pump?
 
you have to put the needle in and push the clamp down
i have the same pump and use it to pump balls all the time
it takes quite a while though
