xbox 360 wired/wireless controller?

hi everyone,

i hope u can help me, i have 2 questions.

1. can a normal xbox 360 wired controller work with xbox 360 elite? cause i have wireless controller but needs batteries all the time.

and

2. what is that little slot for ontop of the wireless controller in the middle between LB, LT, RB, RT?
