Xbox red and white wires.?

Hey, I'm looking to route my Xbox 360 sound through something other than my TV.. If I simply plugged the red and white wires into my stereo, would the Xbox sound play through my stereo?

possibly, I wouldn't try it though. The picture quality would suck
