Yam? What's a simple way to cook a yam so that it tastes good?

I asked my roommate to pick up some sweet potatoes at the grocery store. Instead she bought a yam, saying they didn't have any sweet potatoes.
I wanted sweet potatoes because I want to up the amount of beta carotene in my diet. I'm trying to eat healthier. Any how I figure yams are supposed to be nutritionally good for you too and I don't think I've ever tried one before.
Unfortunately this also means I've never cooked one before either. ***What's something I can do with it to make it taste good? I have a basic spice rack, but nothing special and I don't want to run to the grocery store for more ingredients for some complicated dish.
? Is there something simple I can do with it in my own kitchen tonight? I just want to try it & not be grossed out by the flavor. I don't want to waste food.
Any suggestions?

yams are really really good, but i dont know what you have to use with them ingredient wise. heres a website that may help! i would try the candied yams with maple syrup instead of marshmallows (or whichever ingredient you have). good luck!

What your roommate brought home was in fact a sweet potato. In the U.S. what we typically refer to as a yam is actually just a variation of a sweet potato. A real yam looks nothing like it.

I like both yams and sweet potato's and I cook them both the same way, simple. I cut them up in small pieces sprinkle a little brown sugar and Cinnamon. In the oven 20 minutes, 350, covered. Simple.

I just nuke them in the microwave and eat them with salt, pepper and butter (margarine).
cut the ends of and poke them with a fork or something to prevent steam building up and exploding them.
It should take 4 or 5 minutes to nuke on and you should move them around a bit as they cook to get them to cook evenly.

Wash , peel them, cut them up into chunks and place them in a microwave safe bowl with a little water. Cover with wax paper or Saran Wrap. Cook them for about 10 minutes or until soft. remove from microwave drain out water and put a bit of butter or margarine on them to melt. Yumm.
