Your .02 on anti-immigration laws.

Here are the actual laws requiring the language requirements.

Language

Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 15 years and are over 55 years of age;

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 20 years and are over 50 years of age; or

have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.

So while there are exemptions, they are few and far between.

And yet when you wander around any large city, it appears many immigrants know enough to barely get by. Huh, wonder why that is? I would guess that the ability to understand English as stated ("in ordinary usage") is a VERY low threshold.

Here's a number for you to call:

1-800-WAHHHHmbulance. Operators are standing by ready to laugh at you some more.

Nice veiled way to call someone a racist. CUT THE CRAP!

Did they ask that everything be printed in their native language or did family translate? I'll bet the family translated for them and that means that at least one person had to learn English.

It's not my assessment, it's a fact. Funny you seem to be the one playing the racist card and claiming everyone else is xenophobic and culturally ignorant but you don't seem to have a grasp of the cultures you are discussing; being the first one to condemn the practice of bribery on moral grounds based on American values, while ignoring the fact that in a sense it is not unlike our practice of "tipping for service" at least in their view.

However it illustrates the point that there is a clash of cultural ideologies at work here. It has NOTHING to do with race and everything to do with culture. Canadians come from a similar culture to ours, what is acceptable between the two cultures is similar. It is NOT the same with Latin America.

It's culturally acceptable and legal for me to carry a firearm here in AZ, if I moved to the U.K. should I still be allowed to do so? Why not it's part of my culture, right?

Certain people posting in this thread post from an personally ideal perpective and not from reality or fact (2 I can think of right off the bat)

Time to join reality boys, if you have the ability

No I am not saying illegal aliens=serial killers, I am saying that they are both criminals and as such whether they are smart, talented, hard working etc... it does not change the fact that they broke the law.

Nope.

Hmmm.. let's see, they went about 20 or so years without speaking English. They did fine till my dad came along...

Oh, now you cut the crap. I listed every Latin American minority and my experience. Sorry they don't match your cute little racist views about all Hispanics. Oh, wait, I must not have known the *real* Latinos, then, huh?

Too bad it ends up being race as well, deny it all you like! Your comment about how like us the Canadians are is a thinly veiled racist, or if you prefer, ethnic comment, and both suck. Either way, it becomes "like us=ok", "not like us=bad". You can bitch all you like about me crying "xenophobia", but with comments like that, why are you surprised?!?

Here's a clue for you: If you were born and raised in Mexico for all intent and purpose you are Mexican. Race has nothing to do with it. Race and culture are two separate issues.

Call me a racist again and you and I are going to have issues, GOT IT!

Seems to me we already have "issues". Get over it. Or else I can call you bigoted against ALL Latinos, then. Happy, now? Stop making dumbass comments, and I'll leave you alone.

Jeebus Christ! 2-3 days and this thread is too long to read all the threads.
Didn't know immigration was such a heartfelt issue, no wonder the Repubnants were able to use it as a campaign issue.

Look regarding everyone who is arguing that illegal immigration is wrong just because it's illegal your just being foolish. Illegal doesn't necessarily equal wrong. Once upon a time it was legal to beat your wife with a rod with a diameter below 2" was that right? Once upon a time it was ok to own black slaves, was that right? I'm not trying to say all immigration is ok but with the exceptions of a language barrier and tax evastion I really immigration is ok otherwise. Please drop the illegal is wrong argument dum-dums

On the otherhand. I know already English is not the official language of the states but truthfully it is by de facto. Why is making learning English a problem? It is not only the U.S.'s de facto official language it is also the Lingua Franca of the World. Learning English for anyone can only be an asset. Even if the U.S. were to stop being a superpower tommorow the number of English speaking countries and India's use of English alone would maintaint it's importance. Let's be honest language is a truly fragmenting issue. Google conflicts between the Kurds and the other countries they're occupied by or Sri Lanka or virtually any other ethno-conflict in the world. Language rifts are an issue. Personally I wish everyone spoke the same language so that we'd all stop using language barriers as an excuse to hate each other.

It's very simple.

You want to come to this country, do it legally and become an honest citizen who pays taxes and supports the economy.

Learn the language of the country you now reside in to communicate properly.

what makes you think you are better than evrybody else? is it because you practice law? an a** is a a** and that is what you are. i respect your oppinion but it is your attitude that blows. do you have trouble walking through doorways with that head of yours? i bet you were picked on as a kid and this is your way of getting back at people. here's an idea, realise this my friend i have a good soul and i'm sure you do to so take of the crown and see that you just like me put your pants on one leg at a time. come down from your pedistal and join us mortals. if not i'm sure karma will caught up to you in the end

you are so predictable.. anyone who calls you on your crap and barely suppressed bigotry is ignorant.

Shows how much you know Councilor Clueless. I've quite a few Latino friends, as a matter-of-fact, I've lived in neighborhood that were almost exclusively Latino, I've worked with them and I even speak a fair amount and I never took Spanish in school guess where I learned it? Hey, I even know a bit of Portuguese too.

So before you get on your high horse and make dumbass accusations maybe you should examine at the point you're arguing.

I think I'm about done in this "discussion". Have a nice life.

How ignorant are you?

There is no bigotry or ignorance in asking someone to become a legal citizen, pay their taxes, support the community they live in and learn the primary language of the people in whose country they now reside.

That is how things have been done since the beginning of time, to call that bigotry and ignorance really shows your comprehension of reality, you keep making comments like this post which reflect poorly on you, shows you do not have a grasp on the situation.

*on the ignore list another idiot goes*

nope but these kinds of comments are..

"Their work is vastly inferior, and poorly/cheaply done, which keeps work from those who take pride in doing their work properly and efficiently."

i can go back and find lots of crap like this not only in this thread but lots others.

Nothing but pure honest truth there.

I just fixed a roof done by illegals, not only did they not follow code and not do the job properly, they didn't bother learning the city's code requirements and ended up costing the homeowner an additional 10,000 for me to correct their mistakes(their faliure and poor craftsmanship allowed water to drip into the wall and so it needed replacement, had they done things right that never would have been an issue.
I and other contractors have tons of stories like these, all proven true.

I'm glad you like the illegals homie, but there is a solid track record of poor craftsmanship, inferior work, refusal to learn the language and to learn what the building codes are in each city/province/state and abide by them and do things proper.
