this just goes back to my point about institutional racism. do you really think that white people are less violent than blacks? or less suspicious than blacks? the neighborhood is diverse. why is it he's always calling 911, since april 2011, on suspicious black males? surely, white people are also committing crimes or acting "suspicious" in this time period.
Zimmerman reported every thing he saw or thought he saw. Go through all his calls and you will see he called on anything and every thing. Mostly on the non emergency line.
Yes, Giovanni, I did notice that. What it proves is that you cherry-picked a certain subset of the results to make it appear that he was always calling the police on black men and nobody else, when if you look at the entire list you see that's not remotely the case. Given the other affirmative evidence that he wasn't racist (his protests of police brutality toward an African-American homeless man, his charitable work with African-American youth), it really looks like you're grasping at straws when you assert that he must be racist simply because the individual he was involved in a fatal altercation with was black, and because of "institutionalized racism" that doesn't prove jack about any one particular citizen.
I don't think that's a compelling answer to the statistics, for example:
"There is also evidence that employment status (specifically, being unemployed) interacts with race to produce harsher sentencing patterns for certain subgroups of offenders. A study published in 1991 that examined data from two Florida counties found that while unemployment increased the likelihood of imprisonment for all defendants, young black male defendants suffered the most severe effects. Indeed, the study found that unemployed blacks were 5.2 times more likely to be incarcerated than employed whites."
Edit: Shoot, I misread this, I figured it compared unemployed blacks to unemployed whites, I apologize, mea culpa.
or
"Black defendants who victimize whites tend to receive more severe sentences than both blacks who victimize other blacks (especially acquaintances), and whites who victimize whites."
Edit: Spohn, 2000 conducted a review of the literature and highlighted studies that controlled for socioeconomic status and prior criminal history. She's mentioned in the metastudy conducted by the government, but here's the original article, I don't know if you have access:
"The results of this meta-analytic synthesis of the race/ethnicity and sentencing research indicates that minorities were sentenced more harshly than whites. The differences in sentencing outcomes between these groups generally were statistically significant but statistically small. Larger estimates of unwarranted sentencing disparity were found in analyses examining imprisonment and discretionary decisions and drug offenses. Smaller estimates of unwarranted sentencing disparity were found in analyses that employed more controls variables, especially those that controlled for defendant SES [socioeconomic status, my note], and those that utilized precise measures of key variables (prior criminal record and current offense seriousness). However, even when consideration was confined to those analyses employing key controls and precise measures of key variables, statistically significant but statistically small differences in sentencing outcomes persisted.
These findings call into question the so-called “no discrimination thesis.”
The Department of Justice has opened a “tip line” for people to send in tips to assist in their effort to build a federal criminal case against George Zimmerman.
In showing little respect for the jury’s “not guilty” verdict in the Zimmerman case, the Justice Department is turning to civil rights groups and others to assist in their civil rights investigation of the case.
Barbara Arnwine, president and executive director the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, told the Orlando Sentinel that she was part of a Justice Department conference call on Monday that discussed the matter.
^thats just ridiculous. Our own government doubting in itself. They need to leave that man alone. Was he wrong YES. But there is not enough evidence there to convict him no matter what under US law.
not cherry picking, establishing a pattern that goes almost a calendar year--big difference. it's just like kuma's thoughts on stop and frisk. in theory, the police can s&f any "suspicious" person; in practice, minorities are targeted at a much higher rate than whites. in theory, george zimmerman isn't racist because "he has black friends"; in practice, he targets minorities as suspicious (most of the calls he made the entire previous calendar year he describes as "black male"). george zimmerman targetted a person who was doing nothing except walking to his father's house as "suspicious" and "those guys always get away with it".
I quoted this G for no other reason than to use it as a touchstone to perhaps give a perspective on how castle doctrine can be a reasonable law.
Recently, actually last Saturday, my wife's cousins wife and daughter went to a friends house to feed their cat, when they didn't come back after two hours the husband and his son went to see what was taking so long and found them in the house dead...
Apparently they had stumbled onto a burglary...they had put up a valiant fight with the robbers but succumbed eventually.
This community is small town USA population of maybe 2000 not something you would expect and since it is such a small community it touches all our lives.
My point is, what if the mom was armed? What if the attackers were black? What if She shot the robbers? Would she then be just another white person killing black people for nothing more than robbing a residence. Unfortunately she wasn't armed, and for the record no one knows at this point who murdered them. If someone has the motivation to come into your home then they just may be motivated enough to kill you.
For me protecting my home and family is top priority, I will do whatever it takes to that end you can be sure.
