lacks power? My wife's 1997 Ford Escort with 2.0L SPI engine was often hard to start and sometimes the engine lacked power and the car would slow down.

I took it to Auto Zone and had the error code read. Error code P0402 was given, "EGR valve excessive."

The usual recommendation for this code is to replace the Differential EGR Pressure Feedback Sensor (DPFE). Unfortunately, that's a $50 part that sometimes doesn't solve the problem.

In my wife's case, I found tiny cracks in an 8" long tube running from the top of the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR). On this engine, the FPR is attached to the rear part of the valve cover on the passenger side.

I replaced the tube and this solved the problem! The Check Engine light went out on its own after a few minutes of driving.

I could find no mention of this fix on the Internet and so I'm recording it here in order to help others who have the same problem.

(Somebody please respond so this post can become permanent.)
