Whenever i play a movie on bluray i only get audio from the front left and right speakers and sub-woofer and not the center channel speaker and rear speakers. my question is why is that i can play a dvd on the sony dvd home theater in 5.1 but not on the samsung bluray ? also My fiber optic audio cable runs from the home theater to the tv.

All your speakers are wired to the Sony dvd player and will give you s/s on all speakers. Your blu ray is connected to the hdmi port of the tv and the disc is playing thru the tv. You need a a/v cable or digital cable ran from the audio output of the tv and back to the audio input of the Sony s/s. Then you should get 5.1. You might have to enable the hdmi cable in the tv menu for the input that it is on also. Good luck

You need to set your samsung bluray player to bitstream audio as opposed to PCM Uncompressed.

This is what's happening: Bluray players have a higher quality sound track very similar to the master in the original film. Over optical: PCM will only give you 2 channels. Your receiver is sending lower frequencies to the Sub-woofer. When you pick to bitstream, the signal is downconverted to compressed dolby digital track.

The easiest way to take advantage of surround sound in bluray is to get an HDMI receiver. HDMI cables does not have this limitation as it supports a higher bandwidth
