A question about Divorce in a Christian marriage. If a wife separates?

from a verbally abusive husband, and he does nothing to reconcile, (they tried counseling, but he stopped), and he won't divorce her, then what position does she have? It's like he's trying to keep her in a hostage/marriage situation.
