My 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 just started making a noise when towing with it. When I was going up a small incline and accelerated, the rear end started making a sound like something smacking against metal. The sound reduced with my speed, and disappeared when traveling at low speed. It also did not happen when I took the gooseneck trailer off the trauck and drove it at low and high speeds. I think it might be in the rear differential, because it seems to be related to power demands on the vehicle, but could use a more informed opinion. Thanks.

Possibly could be a U-Joint but it should be making noise when your towing or without towing. But check U-joints to make sure none are starting to fail. Change the fluid in your rear end, see what the condition of the fluid is. Make sure no pieces are there.
