My roommate and I both have 2011 model iMacs and want to purchase a home theatre system for our new apartment. Ideally, we would like to be able to play music from either one of our computers over the audio system. We also would have it hooked up to our HDTV/DVR, and an Xbox 360.

Logistically, what is the best way to sync the iMacs to the receiver? I have seen some receivers that have built-in AirPlay capability, but those are expensive at the moment. Is there a way to turn the surround sound system into a bluetooth device which our iMacs would recognize? I'm not worried about price ranges at the moment, just interested in figuring out all of our configuration options.

One option that may be reasonable would be to buy an airport express. The airport express allows you to stream music from multiple computers to a stereo wirelessly. The downside to the airport express... you can only stream music from iTunes.
