...dear God almighty. Listen, my poor friend--there are so many things wrong with this series. I have a signed copy of Twilight from Salt Lake, from when the book first came out, took it home, read it (was a 14 year old at the time, mind you--target audience!!) and was...appalled. That novel was and is abhorrent. In all honesty, I don't care who you are or how crazy you are about a series--nothing deserves the raving that Twilight has spawned, and if anything DOES...it is certainly not Twilight. Which appeals to a target audience of hopeless teenage girls (vampires aren't real, fyi. Sorry if that destroys you), and has somehow eeked into middle aged women as well (someone should really start a fund for their poor husbands). Rail on me all you want for actually having a life and not obsessing over Twilight, but...it's just poor writing. Fiction or not, the characters are not believable, the prose is purpler than most of the bruises I get from fighting these heavyweight fangirls (you should see the other chicks), and it is really just...sad, to see people so absorbed in these books that they live for them. (I live in a Mormon community, AM Mormon, and trust me when I say no one obsesses over Twilight like a bunch of twittery Mormon chicks. Oh my heavenly days. Please, please...spare us all. Let Twilight die with 'Breaking Dawn'. Let it all just...die. Eviscerated if possible. I acknowledge that it has girls (who have previously squealed in terror at the thought of cracking something larger than a cardboard storybook open)...reading. Which is good. But that's the thing--Twilight is ALL they will read, and hence, they think it's ALL there is of worth in the world. There are so many great books, with characters to care about (fyi--there are, in fact, other reasons to like characters BESIDES them being 'hawt lolz smexy'. I know. It can be hard to grasp) that are not pathetic, angst-filled teenage drizzles that contribute nothing to society but girls swooning over a nonexistent person of a nonexistent race.

I'm not telling you to hate Twilight, and I have no right to. Like it if you want. But don't act like it's the paragon of all things literary, for the love of Mike. It's not art, it's hardly writing. It's a lonely girl's fantasy diary filled with way too many adjectives. A comedy if nothing else.

And, hardy-har...isn't it funny that the ones who love it can't actually write? Like, a decent sentence? Proof that Twilight's prose debilitates all literary ability. I honestly think my I.Q. dropped by several points when I read it. Luckily, I read 'The Count of Monte Cristo' soon afterward, and regained my soul. Phew. Close one.

Nothing revs up an intelligent sixteen year old like hearing little pukes rave about Twilight. It disgraces the names 'Edward' 'Bella' 'Jacob' 'Stephanie', the word 'Twilight' and the fine fruits that are apples. Aye, mate. S'that bad.

You know the topic of good when it stretches over multiple years and people are still replying to it.

I, like most people, found this in frustration at the Twilight series. Regarding the original post, DEAD ON GIRL!

I'm 18 years old and was given the book by my best friend, a loyal follower of the series. Now, I don't disprove of taking a break from literary fiction for the sugar high of popular fiction, but this has gone on too long!

The movie is coming out this year and people are as stoked as ever. I've never been a femi-nazi or anything but i can't help but get mad when SO MANY INTELLIGENT WOMEN AND GIRLS ARE READING THIS CRAP. Its not even good crap, just proof that girls are still obsessed with waiting for that perfect guy. Its bullshit ladies and gentlemen.

I am convinced that readers of twilight have no taste. So if you want to resign your comatose mind to the tacky and cheap illusions of twilight go ahead. I think its just sad to see the entire world head in that direction.
 
y is bella so dumb and pathetic? and really she has no sense of privacy( letting edward stay the night wit her) she really has no reason to love him ecxept that hes hot which is so superficial. She SUCKS as a main character.
 
I love this thread. I forced myself to read Twilight as a 16 year old (close to target audience), and found it ridiculous. To start, it's terribly written. The sentence structure is mediocre, and all adjectives are horribly overused. Not to mention the pacing is brutal, and the whole mess drags horribly. There's only the barest threads of an actual plot, and what little conflict there is is resolved FAR too easily. Bella and Edward sacrifice NOTHING for their perfect little ending.

Also, the characterization is horrible. Bella and Edward are clearly supposed to come off as archetypes- Bella as the 'ordinary girl' and Edward as the 'hot, elegant, dangerous guy'. However, Meyer fails miserably, and instead shoots herself in the foot by not giving them discernible/likable personalities. I could spare a full post or three for Bella, but I'll leave it at the following: she's a whiny, shallow bitch. About three weeks after she meets Edward, her life revolves around him for no apparent reason other than his 'hotness'. This obsession becomes so complete that she's ready to give up onall ambitions of college to marry him and get laid (And I shit you not, that's the reason she ultimately agrees to marry him in Eclipse). Hardly an admirable character.

Edward's no better. He initially becomes attracted to Bella because, apparently, she smells good to him-and it's OMG! TRU LUV! Or not. But, in any case, he quickly starts to obsess over Bella, stalking her on multiple incidents (one of these includes sneaking into her room and watching her sleep-without her knowledge-every night for months). When they finally do get together, Edward attempts to mock-attack Bella, bluff-charging her or physically restraining her in an attempt to rove to her that he's dangerous. Although it may seem he wants to protect her, when he follows these attacks up with declarations of eternal love, it's hard to believe that he's not simply trying to force Bella to allow him to control the relationship. Edward, in addition, repeatedly puts Bella down even before they get together, laughing at her behind her back, or insinuating that she's somehow abnormal. At one point, he even describes her as 'utterly ridiculous'. The perfect man? I think not.

In summary? Twilight blows camel dick.
 
I got about two chapters into the second book and I just...couldn't go on. I think it may have killed me.

One, all of the main characters are completely two dimensional and predictable.
Bella Swan - Angsty Mary Sue/Damsel in Distress - Supposedly really pretty yet has absolutely NO self confidence for no reason, and falls in love with the hottest guy in the series (who loves her back despite her horrid lack of confidence, balance, and hand-eye coordination).
Edward Cullen - Prince Charming/Knight in Shining Armor - Supposedly extremely hot yet has absolutely no self confidence for no reason and falls in love with the prettiest girl in the series (who loves him back despite the fact that he's a worthless vampire).
Jacob Black - Bestest Friend Ever - Is in love with the main character and is brought into this love triangle only to find that she does not love him back, but is content to remain the bestest friend ever because he still has a ridiculous crush on her.

Two, why is it that in every series that has anything to do with vampires they always depict them as either completely evil or whiny bastards who have all of these powers and don't want them??

Three, THEY SPARKLE. Um, what?!

Four, I would like Bella better if her total lack of self-confidence, balance, and hand-eye coordination didn't make every character in the book want to bang her and/or eat her.

Five, COMPLETELY unrealistic character reactions.

Um. Have you EVER payed that much attention to the new kid? Seriously.

Hundreds of pages about Bella's dreary life and how much she misses Edward if he is two feet out of her radius. It's not even a good plotline!

Finally, the writing sucks. It really does. The only times the author is even a little bit descriptive is when she's describing po-dunk rainy little Forks or how hot her vampires are.

this might be a bit late but OMG how annoying is it. I have read the series and they really bored me. I mean really they just annoy the hell out of me. I am 14 and all my friends are OBSESSED with it. God I mean every time I see them it's like 'twilight twilight twilight!' Its all you ever hear. I just don't find the series very interesting, there are far better books written than twilight.

Thank you so much! I really liked this book when I read it. Then I read Breaking Dawn,omfg. I wanted to shred every single copy in the world so that no one else had to see it! At the very least think of the basics. She's seventeen,she gets married,she has a mutant baby.(don't forget the almost being killed while she has sex,I don't know why she didn't)A ton of thinks are out to kill her and she has no psychological damage. I love to look back in the second book,the very end of the second chapter and watch the months without Edward fly by. I detest this series. If you haven't read Breaking Dawn,don't,or do it's garenteed to fuel your hatred. I'm going to the movie just to mess up people who 'love' Edward but haven't even finished the first book. They are so shallow too! "Edward is hot!" "And that's why you love them?!"[the books] This is the gist of many conversations I've had with twilighters. Thank you so much for making me not alone!

That reminds me, they're all allegorical characters too! This is a lit. term that means they are one sided people just there to prove a point,they don't even have names sometimes! There sole purpose in The Time Machine was to argue as a scientist,a young person, ect.(That was a good book) This whole book is stuffed with them! It makes everything pointless and one sided! If you need a certain emotion,just call in that character! This whole series is a joke. A really bad one that's not even the slightest bit funny.
 
Im a 15 year old girl. Hate the book and the girls who love the book. I only read a few pages and it drove me mad! The book starts off with "im new, im pale, i suck at sports." I mean, the point of books is to entertain you, not make you feel depressed. I flipped through it some more: "Edward is so beautiful" and "why is he so perfect" and "I wish he'd rescue me" and all the whining...! ARGH SHWSEFKD!

Fact#1: he is perfect because he is FICTION.
Fact#2: cliches are called cliches for a reason.

I rest my case.
 
omg i was made to read twilight and i couldn't get pat the first paragraph! i mostley hate it because i love harry potter and twilight took harry potter's movie spot but hey thats beside the point. every where i go its all edward he's soooooo hot! i dont think so! i mean apart from face value he has as much personality as a block of concrete!
 
I didn't like it either. I think people like it because they are:

a) female and too young to know better
b) female and too old to have it better
c) stupid
