Firstly, I am fifteen years old, I am a twilight fan and, although I can understand everything you people are saying, I think that a lot of the reasons you list for hating it are the reasons why so many people do like it. Whilst reading it, I too could see the cliches, the mediocre writing and the fact that Bella is a Mary Sue. But still, whilst hating myself for it, I could not stop reading. 'Why was this?' I asked myself. Here are my answers:
a) It's the perfect escapism book. Everything's so happy. And what's so wrong with that? People enjoy to read it, it makes them feel good and hopeful about life. You're probably thinking 'real life's not like that though'. So? Surely thats the point of a book. Who wants to read about the boring life of a normal girl? I certainly don't!
b) It's mediocre writing, perhaps even Fanfiction standard. It may not be to the writings of the great Thomas Hardy or Jane Austin but there is no denying that once in a while most people do just want a simple and easy book to delve themselves into without the strain of complex language and in depth themes.
c) It shows Edward to have old-fashioned, respectful views on sex and marriage and, in my opinion, to look for someone who will love you as a person and not an object is most certainly a good message to send to young girls.
Basically, I think that Twilight is simply a book of innocent fun and no one ever proclaimed to be the next Pride and Prejudice. Yes, maybe it does get annoying when people are appraising it to be the greatest book ever written but, to be honest, everyone I know who has read it just has simply enjoyed it. It's not as if they are harming anyone else in the process. I am sorry to say this but quite a lot of haters, in my opinion, are just academic snobs who feel the need to make it known that they are so much more intellectual than the 'stupid fangirls' who read it. Most readers are not idiots and, believe it or not, can too appreciate the works of great authors. Yes, you are entitled to your own opinions but as am I and I personally think so what if its not a masterpiece of literature? If you don't like it, well, then just don't read it. There's no point dwelling on a bad book! Why don't you spend your time reading the works of these great authors instead of wasting precious time complaining about it? (although i do understand that it is sometimes fun to have a good moan) But basically what i'm trying to say is... DEAL WITH IT... because unless you have a magic wand to wave, the fangirls just ain't gonna disappear!
