I'm writing a novel about a rookie baseball player just reaching the bigs. Does anyone have any funny stories they have heard or from personal experience about a non-harmful hazing incident? 10 points and credit in my book for the best story. Thanks!

Suggest you read Jay Johnstone's book(s) - he was a master of comical non-harmful baseball related hazings.

Although I'm not sure he was still a "rookie" when this happened, my favorite "hazing" story involves the Dodgers' Steve Sax.

In case you don't know, Sax came up with a world of hitting talent in the 1980s but had the knack of making the most bone-headed errors at 2B. He also had an child-like, energetic, almost hyperactive personality which made him the perfect target for practical jokes.

The Dodgers were on the road and was enjoying a travel day off. The team had been struggling (in part due to Sax's errors) so Tommy decided they needed a morale boost. One of his old buddies owned a restaurant in town and he arranged to host an authentic Hawaiian style luau for the team, complete with hula dancers and a whole roast pig.

After the luau, the players retired to their hotel rooms. A couple of the veterans somehow got a hold of the roast pig's head and put it in Sax's bed with a note that said "Cut down on the errors" and was signed "The Godfather."

When Sax described the incident years later he said he went into the hotel room and never bothered to turn on the lights. He simply undressed and climbed into bed...At some point, he reached over and said "I felt something, wet, clammy and meat-like."

When he turned on the light, the other players said you could hear Sax's screams all the way down in the lobby.

Everybody had a good laugh and the team went on to have a good run, despite Sax's errors.
