Anyway To Bypass Copywrite Laws from cable companys, so DVR will write to DVD?

Recently bought a Sony RDR-GX257 DVR/DVD-R. HBO, Cin, Enc, none will let me burn or record content of those channels, and multiple others. Is there a way to get around this? The cable company told me I'd have to actually contact the channels or something.
