are paid online survey's a scam?

I think they must be because they offer you anywhere from $5 -300 for each survey you take. If this were true why havent you heard anyone doing it? Everyone would be doing it. They all seem to want you to spend $30- 100 to buy a membership to take the survey. That right there tells me its a scam. You should not have to pay to make money. Anyone know of any positive experience doing this
 
I'm from UK but I do online surveys quite a lot. I do about 2 or 3 each week (each survey between 5 -25mins long) and earn about £10 - £15 a month. I didn't pay to join I just signed my name up and they send me emails when they have suitable surveys for me. I couldn't earn a living from it but it's a good way of getting a bit of extra cash to treat yourself. They pay me via paypal.
