I can't remember what brand I used but there are some out there that are gradual tanners. They come in lotion form and you use them daily, and they slowly add tint to your skin. Just make sure you wash your hands after applying it, and don't wear white pants or anything crazy 
It's a lot harder to mess up with this type because you just stop applying when you think you're dark enough.
If you can afford it, you might try a spray on tan. I don't know how much they cost but I've been considering it.
