I bought a Tiger Direct computer with an Asus P4S533 motherboard in it and once I formatted a HD I discovered I could no longer boot from an optical drive. I have had this computer for a month now, and was trying my best to figure out how to boot from DVD. In the BIOS boot order it listed the Optical Drive third in the boot order. So I updated the BIOS to the latest version only to find it didn't change anything.
I wanted to install Windows 7 on this PC but could only boot from the optical drive by erasing my HD and repartitioning it without reformatting it. Unfortunately not amout of effort or research on the web could help me get Windows 7 to work on this motherboard(Kept getting a "No CD/DVD Driver error 0xc000000e.) so I decided to reinstall Windows XP. I new it would boot from the optical drive as the HD wasn't formatted. And that's when it hit me.
Why not temporarily disable booting from the HD in the BIOS long enough to get Windows installed the reinable it? I did so and the computer automatically booted from DVD(Due to the HD not being formatted). But much to my surprise, I came back in the room to find that Windows XP had finished the install and waiting on me to change my screen resolution!
After another reboot I saw it for myself. With the HD still disabled in the BIOS boot order, the computer in fact attempted to boot from the Windows XP CD, and then after the timeout it booted from the HD. So there you have it folks. That's how you get an Asus P4S533 motherboard to boot from an optical drive.
Now my question is. Has anyone found any kind of workaround for the Windows 7 0xc000000e device not found error?
