...a christian just in case? Hell is eternal, why risk it? If there is no chance of it being real, why do millions of people believe in it?

You just won your own debate with the subsequent question. If you haven't given me a chance to say that hell in the biblical sense isn't proven and that it doesn't matter how many people believe it, it's still wrong (as was the case with slavery); then you've answered your own question with an assertion before I even type a single letter.

In the 'millions of people who believe in it' do you include non practising religious sorts? I bet more than half of them are.

They wouldn't really believe, they would just be fakes in the religion. They need proof first.

I could make the same argument for the cycle of suffering and it'd still be equally crap.

Because as an atheist I don't believe in Hell so I am not afraid of it and I refuse to pay lip service to something I don't believe in just to avoid a place I don't believe in. I can't decide what is right for millions of people I can only decide what is right for me.

I actually care about believe things on the basis of them being true rather than believing things be cause of their potential consequences.

Yes, but what if I follow Jesus, the Rapture comes, and Oh Look, there's Muhammad with Allah and they look pissed. Being an Atheists, I can easily say that I didn't take any sides. If I followed Jesus, well I'm F&*^#!

You assume your religion is the only one that promotes eternal punishment?

Heads up: Christianity isn't very original.
