Bike seat question... Trek 700?

I have a Trek 700 bike, I know it is old, but I love it and I will not get rid of it until the frame goes out. I have been making some much needed repairs on it and I am almost done. I need to buy a new seat because the vinyl ripped open so when it rains, the exposed cushion from the seat soaks up a ton of water and I am forced to ride it standing or wet my pants. How do I get the measurements from the hole where the bike seat goes? Let me know if you understand.
Can I just switch the saddle? Do all fit or do I have to find a specific saddle?
 
you take the saddle off the seat post and change it. not the post and saddle. spend the money get a good saddle. unless you want to up grade the seat post too. the the size is stamped on the lower 3" of post. common size is 27.2mm.
