further to my last question i have now had new plug and air filter changes along with oil but my car is STILL backfiring occasionaly and will SOMETIMES not rev over 2500 therefore it has no power to drive help?

Have it put on the BMW diagnostics facility, that will be your cheapest option, get it done correctly. This fault on the zenith carbs used to be caused by the rubber diaphram having a hole in it.

I was a lifelong Merc fan and stupidly I bought one of these BMW's a 325 instead, and had nothing but trouble with it.
Never again.
Scrap it and buy a Merc.

This does sound like an intermittent engine management fault the rev limiter engages when a problem occurs but is not serious enough to stop completely but allows you to drive home or to a garage only full diagnostics can locate the fault as it should show up on a computer diagnostics check .Unfortunately probably have to be done at a bmw garage so expensive
