Can games for the Nintendo 3DS be played on a regular DS?

I have one of the first DSs ever made; the bulky silver ones. I know it's pretty much obsolete by now, but can you play games made for the 3DS on it like you can play DS Lite games on it?

because there were never games specifically for the DS Lite.
