Can I bypass a copyright protection by rec/g onto VHS first, then to DVD...

...when I'm rec/g C/R movies off the TV? My husband wants to record "The Nerds" among other movies, for his personal DVD collection, but our DVD recorder will not let him b/c of copyright. I thought this might be a solution. Record from The TV, to the DVR, then to VHS, then to DVD. Will that work or not?
