Particularly, can religious figures active in politics subsequently become corrupted by politics and power? What happens when the line is crossed between good religion and dirty politics? What happens when something against a religious figure's political views is decreed to be against religious law?

Can followers of a religion become complacent in a belief that they can do no wrong, no matter how morally wrong an act actually is?

What do actual religious or philosophical texts have to say about this?

power corrupts. mix already corrupt religious power with already corrupt political power and it's doubly corrupt.

Yes because the President could state something wrong about the bible and have everyone believe him.
